Sarath Kumarasinghe
Sarath Kumarasinghe is one of the foremost classical Esraj players in North America, with a keen eye on improvisation. He is a proud recipient of Ontario Lieutenant Governor’s award for artistic services from Hon. Elizabeth Dowdeswell. He started playing the Esraj when he was of 12 years while in studying in secondary school in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Under the guidance of Visharad H.de S Jayasekera, Sarath traveled to the Bhatkande College of Music, Lucknow, India and nurtured his skills in classical vocal and instrumental music. Sarath has participated in numerous recordings and performed on radio, television stage and in movies on classical and light music.
His first solo Esraj instrumental recording of six Sinhala and Hindi songs was telecasted by the Independent Television Network of Sri Lanka (ITN) in the year 2000, which inspired the light music listeners and the musicians in the country alike due to his soothing style of play and the uniqueness of the tone of this hitherto classical instrument.
In June 2004, Sarath held his first Solo Esraj Instrumental concert, Sonduru Sathsara (Immortal Melodies) in Toronto. The sequel, Sonduru Sathsara 2 was held in Toronto in November 2006 with the launch of his second CD by the same name. He performed Sonduru Sathsara concert in Sri Lanka twice to-date, at the prestigious Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (B.M.I.C.H.) and the Bishops College Auditorium in Colombo.
Sarath has released four Esraj Instrumental CDs to-date and is presently working on the fifth.
Sarath is a renowned music tutor in Mississauga, Ontario tutoring children and adults in instrumental and vocal music through Sathsara School of Music and All Music Ent.
